Welsh National Championships

The Welsh National Championships will take place in Dumfries on the first weekend of March. Teams will not be automatically be expected to represent Wales at European or World level if victorious – this will be determined via the Curling Performance Programme.

For more details about this event or the venue, please visit the event page for the Welsh Championships. Entry forms can also be found there to download.

Wales Curling Performance Programme

Historically, teams representing Wales on the international stage have formed themselves and competed at Playdowns (if there are sufficient teams to warrant it) to decide on who has the right to go. With continually-rising standards in other nations, the Welsh Curling Association have made the decision to move to a selection policy instead.

The new selection policy has not changed the eligibility criteria.

Full details can be found in the Selection Policy Document. Continue reading

League Cup standings after 4 rounds

The fourth round matches in the 2012-13 League Cup took place on Monday, and after a couple of tight matches the line-up for Finals Day is now complete.  Sealand Sliders took a peel with Mid Wales Vikings, meaning the Vikings rather than the Sliders go into the High Road Final. Sealand Whackers do make the High Road, courtesy of a win over Deeside Curling Club.

The table is now as follows:

MWV 4 3 0 1 43 19 24 16 7

First night curling in 2013

Happy New Year to our players and fans alike!

We hope you had an enjoyable Christmas period, and you are looking forward to curling starting up again.

Our first matches of 2013 will be this coming Monday (7th January) in the League Cup, with Mid Wales Kites up against the Deeside Early Birds on the 5:30 session, and all other matches at 7:30.

This month is going to be quite busy for Welsh Curling – over the next three weeks we have matches in 3 different competitions, and the Four Nations is only a fortnight away too.

2013 also has the distinction of being the 40th anniversary of curling first being played in Queensferry (as far as we know), with the Welsh Curling Association’s 40-year milestone coming in 2014.

League Cup – table after round 3

After three matches in the League Cup, just 4 teams are now in the running for the title. These are:Mid Wales Vikings, Sealand Sliders, Sealand Whackers and Deeside Curling Club.

Wales’ only team at the 2012 European Curling Championships struggled.

With no women’s team entered, it was down to the men to fly the flag for Wales.  Their first match was a tight contest against Spain which brought a 1-shot win, but their remaining 6 matches went against them.  The competition ended with Wales bottom of the B-division table, meaning relegation to the C-division.
