Winter Olympic Curling

The 22nd Winter Olympic Games have taken place in Sochi, Russia, with Curling at the Games hosted at the Ice Cube Arena, from Monday 10th February until Friday 21st February.

Great Britain’s ladies took bronze by beating Switzerland in a very tight winner-takes-all match, while the men surprised some fans and commentators alike by reaching the final to win Silver. You can review both the men’s and women’s performances online – details of coverage are on the BBC website.

This event or equipment for it has been part- or fully-funded by the Development Assistance Programme of the World Curling FederationAfter the Olympics, there will be the opportunity to Try Curling at Deeside (the first 4 Mondays of March).  If you have been before, you are welcome to have another go.  Current FPOW members are asked to come down as normal and help out. You can also download our TryCurling Session Poster for more info or to advertise our events.

A Sizzling Summer…

A series of shields, cups, medallions and other trophies

The trophies given out during the FPOW Awards Presentation

In just under a week’s time, we will hold our summer FPOW Awards Presentation.  This year it is taking the form of a barbecue, and we hope that the good weather holds until then, as current forecasts suggest…

At the event, kindly hosted by Ann & John Stone, we will hold a raffle to help raise funds for the club. Members: Please bring something that can act as a raffle prize if you are able, and friends who might like to enjoy the afternoon and take part.

The event is about awarding those who have achieved during the 2012-13 season, but given the Province’s financial position also cannot run at a loss – so please bring payment with you (£7/£3 for children).

If you intend to come, please let Ann & John know as soon as possible (if not already) so all the catering is in order.  Remember to bring any additional drinks you might wish for. Look forward to seeing you there!

TryCurling & Points Competition 2012

We have been waiting – with various levels of patience – but the start of the new season has finally arrived. On Monday 10th September, we have a special one-off price for unlimited time on the ice (up to our booking limit around 10:30pm) of £5 per adult, £3 for Juniors (under-21), to include any or all of: TryCurling, Points Competition or practice.

There is a chance for you to Try Curling for the very first time. Come along to Deeside Ice Rink for 5:30, 6:30 or 7:30pm. Established members and coaches, please be on hand to help out when needed!

At 7pm that same evening, the Points Competition gets underway. If you have never taken part in one before, have a look at the Points Competition page for a handy guide (including a nifty animation).  It is a good way to test your skills and find out what needs improvement.

Finally, if you have been playing a while and do not want to take part in the Points Competition, there should be some practice ice available, or just being an extra person to help out will always be useful.

(updated) A member of the First Province of Wales has taken the bull by the horns when it comes to the finances of the club.

With a bit of fitness training, a little inspiration from events in London and around France plus a rediscovered love of cycling, Martin Gregory set off to Scotland.

This August Bank Holiday weekend (25th-26th August) Martin cycled more than 160 miles to the English/Scottish border, and kept going all the way to Edinburgh.  The total journey, completed over 2 days, was 255 miles, taking 16 hours and 35 minutes on the move.  He had already got around £500 pledged, with proceeds going towards the FPOW finances.
