Mid Wales Vikings win Premier League (final results)

Four curling players in black outfits

The victorious Mid Wales Vikings, after winning their title-crucial final game on Monday 18th March

The final night of curling at Deeside in the 2012-13 season started with two teams still able to win the FPOW Premier League title, and both were from the Mid Wales club.

Mid Wales Vikings went into the evening as favourites, given that even losing against Connah’s Quay Seals would not automatically lose them the title.  Mid Wales Kites were the only other team able to win the league, but needed a conclusive win over the Wheelchair Curlers as well as the Vikings to lose.

In the end, it was all academic, as the Vikings took a 7-4 win, and secured their first Premier League win in recent history. It means the Vikings have secured two titles this season, after winning the League Cup a few weeks earlier. Continue reading

League Cup standings after 4 rounds

The fourth round matches in the 2012-13 League Cup took place on Monday, and after a couple of tight matches the line-up for Finals Day is now complete.  Sealand Sliders took a peel with Mid Wales Vikings, meaning the Vikings rather than the Sliders go into the High Road Final. Sealand Whackers do make the High Road, courtesy of a win over Deeside Curling Club.

The table is now as follows:

Team Played Won Lost Peeled For Against +/- Ends Pts
MWV 4 3 0 1 43 19 24 16 7
SWK 4 3 0 1 34 26 8 15 7

Mid Wales Vikings and Sealand Whackers will face each other in the High Road Final, while Sealand Sliders will take on Deeside Early Birds for the Low Road Final.  The Finals and remaining matches (which will now be Friendlies) will take place on Monday 28th January.

Welsh Bonspiel – final

Thirds in the head

Third players in the head as Woolston (l) and Horton (far r) throw skip stones

The deciding match of the Welsh Bonspiel was set up between the teams skipped by Andrew Woolston and Ken Horton. Andrew’s team qualified from the Red section with a perfect win-loss record, and an impressive shot difference (+27). Ken took one peel from the Green section matches, going into the final with a 7-2 win over John Brown’s rink to give them a 1-end advantage over Graeme Adam.silver plate and 4 miniature wooden curling stonesThe final started with Ken Horton having last-stone advantage, but he was unable to make great use and the first end finished with the Horton rink taking just a single shot.

Results: Premier League Day 13

Here are the results from the penultimate evening of play in the FPOW Premier League for the 2011-12 season. The results of Monday 12th March mean there is now no team that can catch Deeside Curling Club at the top of the Division One table, and they will be awarded the title. The battle for second place is still active.

Mid Wales Kites take Division Two title

Monday 20th February was the last day of play in Division Two, and the contest went down to the wire. A win for Sealand Shooters by quite some margin was still not enough to beat Mid Wales Kites to the title, though 2 additional shots for the Wheelchair Curlers and the Division result may have been rather different.

In Division One, the top two teams swapped positions as Deeside Curling Club beat Sealand Sliders by 5 shots.

Points Competition 2011 (results)

Our first event this season was the Points Competition, held on Monday 5th September.  Scores were awarded as 2 (a “perfect” shot) or 1 (for a right result) in the disciplines of striking, inwicking, drawing, guarding, chap & lie, wick & curl in, raising, chipping the winner, drawing through a port and outwicking.  With 2 attempts at each shot, the maximum possibe score was 40.

Results

Many congratulations to James Pougher, who took the competition with a clear 6-point lead over his nearest rivals.  There was some confusion at the end of the competition with a tie for both 3rd and 5th places, which had to be decided with the use of additional throw(s).
