Points Competition 2013

The first night of the season introduces new people the the sport, and gets existing players back into form after the long summer break.  There were a number of people who came to the Try Curling sessions. If you wish to have the same experience, why not come along next Monday?

The Points Competition was not high-scoring.  Scores were awarded as 2 (a “perfect” shot) or 1 (for a right result) in the disciplines of striking, inwicking, drawing, guarding, chap & lie, wick & curl in, raising, chipping the winner, drawing through a port and outwicking.  With 2 attempts at each shot, the maximum possible score was 40.  Out of a maximum possible score of 40, the top score was 22 – the same as last year.

Mid Wales Vikings win Premier League (final results)

Four curling players in black outfits

The victorious Mid Wales Vikings, after winning their title-crucial final game on Monday 18th March

The final night of curling at Deeside in the 2012-13 season started with two teams still able to win the FPOW Premier League title, and both were from the Mid Wales club.

Mid Wales Vikings went into the evening as favourites, given that even losing against Connah’s Quay Seals would not automatically lose them the title.  Mid Wales Kites were the only other team able to win the league, but needed a conclusive win over the Wheelchair Curlers as well as the Vikings to lose.

In the end, it was all academic, as the Vikings took a 7-4 win, and secured their first Premier League win in recent history. It means the Vikings have secured two titles this season, after winning the League Cup a few weeks earlier. Continue reading

Tight finish to Premier League Season – still 2 teams in running

The Premier League title will be going to the Mid Wales Club this season, after Monday’s games left only their own teams numerically able to reach the top of the table – but there is still no runaway winner.

Two teams are still vying for the title of Premier League Champions, despite one of the front-runners forfeiting their early match on Monday.  Although Mid Wales Kites actually won the game on the early session, only one member of their own club was playing. Because a team is only ruled as ‘present’ if at least two team members play, the game was recorded as a loss against them. The Kites did keep in contention by winning their late session match with a ‘legal’ team.

Mid Wales Kites will need a big win over the Wheelchair Curlers if they are to take the title next week, but would still be reliant on Mid Wales Vikings losing against Connah’s Quay Seals. Continue reading

Premier League results – 4th March 2013

With just two weeks left in the season, there are only three teams who have a chance of taking the Premier League title, and it is getting awfully close at the top. Mid Wales Vikings and Deeside Mix & Match are the obvious contenders, but third-ranked Mid Wales Kites still have one game in hand, and will be playing back-to-back matches next Monday (11th March).
